2009 MTV VMA


2009_MTV_Music_Video_AwardsThe 2009 MTV Video Music Awards took place on September 13, 2009 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Comedian Russell Brand hosted the event for the second time in a row. Madonna opened the show with a speech about Michael Jackson. Janet Jackson made an appearance at the VMAs to pay musical tribute to her late brother and honor his career.

On August 4, the nominees were announced. Beyoncé and Lady Gaga led the pack with 9 nominations each, closely followed by Britney Spears with 7.

VMA artists also performed at a MTV/Time Warner Cable/VMA weekend pre-party and competition at The Fillmore at Irving Plaza on September 11. Having narrowed over 190 New York City bands down to the top 3, the bands competed in front of top MTV VMA talent for the inaugural Best Breakout New York City Artist Award.[3] The competition took place in between performances from VMA artists, including Fefe Dobson and Cobra Starship. The battle of the bands were between the all-female pop/folk/rock harmony trio The Shells, the rock quartet MeTalkPretty, and the rock quartet Red Directors. The winning band was revealed the night of the VMAs, and showcased nationally on MTV2.
